Types of Connector Seals

When a connector needs to be protected from the operating environment, two different types of connector seals should be considered. There are two types of seals: hermetic seals, where the contacts are air and gas-tight, and environmental seals, such as those with an IP rating or protection class.

Hermetic seals

Hermetic seals typically use glass, ceramic, or epoxy to create a pressure seal. They are designed to withstand high pressures and are therefore commonly used in military, aerospace, or offshore applications.

The airtight seal is just water and airtight seals. The sealing process is named after the Greek god Hermes and the ‘sealing tradition’ that led to alchemy experiments. The first seal was a sealed glass tube called the Hermes seal, used in very early alchemy. Although the first seal is made of glass, there are many ways to create an airtight seal.

Environmental Seal

Environmental seals protect against hazardous contaminants such as water, dust, and dirt. They are designed to maintain the electrical performance of the contacts. They are typically used in mobile machinery, marine, and automotive applications. Let's take a look at automotive connector sealing.

When sealing connectors against the environment, a connector gasket is used to prevent contaminants from entering the connection area. For low-temperature applications that require frequent connections and disconnections, these O-rings are usually made of some kind of rubber, with fluoropolymers and ethylene-propylene rubber being the most common.
